Breaking News: Africa CDC Issues Statement on Suspected Viral Haemorrhagic Fever in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, November 13, 2025 - The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is on high alert, closely monitoring reports of a suspected viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) outbreak in Jinka, Southern Ethiopia. This comes as a potential health crisis unfolds, with eight suspected cases reported by the Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) on November 12, 2025.

The situation is still under investigation, and no definitive cause has been identified yet. However, the swift action taken by EPHI and the transparent communication with Africa CDC demonstrate a proactive approach to public health.

In a significant development, Africa CDC Director General, H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, had a crucial conversation with Ethiopian Minister of Health, H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, emphasizing the importance of early detection and transparent reporting. Dr. Kaseya assured the Minister of Africa CDC's unwavering support in containing the potential outbreak.

During the Africa CDC Weekly Press Briefing on Health Emergencies, held on November 13, 2025, Dr. Kaseya provided Member States with preliminary information and outlined response readiness. The Africa CDC team on the ground is working closely with national authorities, offering technical support and guidance.

As the situation unfolds, Africa CDC will continue to collaborate with the Ethiopian government and partners, providing timely updates as laboratory results are confirmed. This collaborative effort highlights Africa CDC's commitment to strengthening health systems across the continent.
