Scars are more than skin deep — they shape stories we often avoid. On the brink of World Mental Health Day, La Roche-Posay took a bold step by unveiling its documentary titled “Scars of Life,” which explores the profound impact scars have—not only on the surface of our skin but deep within our emotional and social well-being. But here's where it gets controversial: scars aren’t just physical marks; they are symbols that carry stigma, silence, and sometimes shame.
This 25-minute film, created by the production company Elephant, premiered at the stylish Pathé Palace theater in Paris, a venue redesigned by famed architect Renzo Piano. For those interested, it’s now accessible worldwide on YouTube.
La Roche-Posay, a brand under the L’Oréal umbrella, has been dedicated for 50 years to transforming the lives of over two billion individuals suffering from skin conditions. Alexandra Reni-Catherine, the brand’s global general manager, describes this as "no small ambition" but a mission they firmly embrace. Today, it stands as the top skin care brand recommended by dermatologists globally.
"Our commitment extends beyond just treating skin; it includes everyone—from infants to those battling illnesses, to future generations," Reni-Catherine emphasizes. She views skin health not merely as a personal concern but as an essential element of public health.
"Scars of Life" is a compelling blend of heartfelt testimonials from dermatologists, sociologists, and individuals living with various skin conditions. Their stories are deeply authentic and emotionally impactful, which Reni-Catherine describes as "moving and genuine."
The documentary goes beyond discussing visible skin issues, delving into the emotional scars and life challenges that often accompany them. La Roche-Posay aims to dismantle the taboos and open conversations about scars, empowering people to live freer, more confident lives.
Right from the opening narration: "Everyone carries scars, and each one tells a unique story. They reveal who we are and what we’ve endured. Scars might come from injury, disease, or surgery. But how much do they really affect our lives? How do society and others perceive them?
"Some scars are embraced, others unwanted. They can be visible or hidden, celebrated or shunned. It’s time to break the silence around scars—to foster dialogue and harness science’s potential to improve care and understanding."
Following the film’s screening, a thought-provoking panel discussion featured dermatologist Dima Haider, known as Docteur_Skin; skincare influencer Samy, aka Skincarebysamy; Emma Fric, cofounder of The Prospectivists; and Julien Witenberger, La Roche-Posay’s global image and communication director.
The conversation raised important questions: Are scars merely skin deep, or do they shape identity and self-worth? Do we, as a society, do enough to support those with scars? And can science and open dialogue finally erase the stigma often attached?
