China-Africa Partnership: A Model for Global South Cooperation

NAIROBI, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The partnership between China and Africa is a shining example of South-South cooperation, according to a Kenyan expert. Peter Kagwanja, president and CEO of the Africa Policy Institute, an independent African think tank, emphasizes the positive impact of this collaboration on global governance.

In a recent interview, Kagwanja highlighted the current global uncertainty and the need for a more inclusive and fair world order. He believes that the existing international governance system is unjust and requires reform. To bring about change, he advocates for strengthening cooperation within the Global Governance Initiative (GGI).

The GGI, as described by Kagwanja, is a global public good provided by China. It aims to move beyond unilateralism and hegemonism, address biased leadership, and build a fair, just, and prosperous future in a turbulent and uncertain world. This initiative is a testament to China's commitment to global peace and development.

Under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China and African nations have deepened collaboration on key development issues. Kagwanja emphasizes that development is the path to peace and sustainable stability. By supporting development, China is essentially contributing to peace-building on a grand scale. He praises China's 'quiet, helpful, and useful diplomacy' approach, which has been instrumental in resolving conflicts in countries like South Sudan and Somalia, potentially saving millions of lives.

Kagwanja also highlights the success of infrastructure projects, such as the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway, which have significantly improved local livelihoods. These projects are a testament to the tangible benefits of China-Africa cooperation.

Over the past 25 years, Chinese companies have made remarkable contributions to Africa's infrastructure. They have built or upgraded over 10,000 km of railways, nearly 100,000 km of highways, 1,000 bridges, 100 ports, and 66,000 km of power transmission and distribution lines, connecting the African continent like never before.

Kagwanja concludes by emphasizing China's consistent support for Africa, from opposing colonialism and apartheid to the fight against COVID-19 and promoting peace and development. He believes that this collaboration sets a model for cooperation across the Global South and beyond, showcasing a responsible and effective approach to international relations.
