Get ready, Formula 1 fans, because the Las Vegas Grand Prix could be a defining moment in the 2025 season! Lando Norris is on the cusp of a career-defining achievement, inching closer to his first-ever world title. He's currently leading the drivers' standings with a commanding 24-point lead over his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. It's been an incredible turnaround for Norris, especially considering Piastri's strong start.
Piastri, who was 34 points ahead after a victory in the Dutch Grand Prix back in August, has faced a string of challenges, failing to secure a podium finish in the last five races. Meanwhile, Norris has been a picture of consistency, building on his pole position victory in Mexico with a sprint success and another race win in Sao Paulo.
And this is the part most people miss... No driver has squandered such a significant lead with only three races remaining since the points system changed in 2010. But Norris, ever the pragmatist, isn't getting ahead of himself. He knows the road to the championship is long and arduous. "They're just strong results, which is exactly what I need, exactly what I'm fighting for every single weekend and every day," he said after his Sao Paulo win. "So just very pleased, but it's still a long way to go. So no point getting too happy or excited just yet."
Here's where it gets interesting: Norris can't clinch the championship in Vegas, but he could potentially end the title defense of Max Verstappen. The four-time defending champion, despite a valiant effort and a thrilling third-place finish in Sao Paulo after starting from the pit lane, is now 49 points behind Norris. If Norris wins in Vegas and Verstappen finishes third or lower, Verstappen's hopes for the title are officially over. Verstappen, ever the competitor, remains undeterred, stating, "We've got to be realistic. Over the whole season, we've not been good enough, but we will keep on trying to win races and see what happens."
Piastri remains Norris's biggest threat. Despite a controversial 10-second penalty in Sao Paulo, which cost him a podium finish, he still has the pace to challenge. Even Charles Leclerc, who was taken out of the race due to the incident, expressed sympathy for Piastri. Piastri, with seven wins this season, needs to close the gap quickly. With races in Doha and Abu Dhabi still to come after Vegas, the pressure is on. "I'll just try to get the most out of it as I can," said Piastri. "I'm just trying to get on top of things with that and try and have the best weekends we can."
Ferrari had a weekend to forget in Interlagos, with both Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton failing to finish. Hamilton called it a "nightmare," and Ferrari's president urged the drivers to focus on racing. Ferrari is still in the running for second place in the constructors' standings, but they need a strong performance in Vegas. Mercedes currently leads Ferrari by 36 points, with Red Bull just four points behind Ferrari. Mercedes will be confident, having secured a one-two finish in Vegas last year.
