The Philadelphia Phillies are taking a calculated risk on a player's resurgence, this time investing $10 million in a one-year contract with Adolis García. But here's the catch: García, once a key member of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, has been on a downward trajectory since then.
García, who was non-tendered in November due to two consecutive seasons of below-average hitting, will receive a modest salary bump from his previous $9.25 million. The Phillies, in dire need of a competent right-handed outfielder, are pinning their hopes on García to fill the void left by Nick Castellanos, who is likely to be traded or released before spring training.
The deal, according to league sources, is subject to a physical examination and was first reported by Francys Romero.
In a market of the top 50 free agents, only a handful are outfielders, and among them, García stands out as a right-handed batter, making him an ideal fit for a team seeking right-handed power.
García brings an impressive 89th percentile power in terms of average exit velocity, which could boost the Phillies' outfield home runs and slugging percentage, which were below average last season. However, his power is accompanied by a tendency to swing and miss, a habit that became more pronounced after his breakout 2023 campaign.
Last season, García chased more pitches than all but 24 other batters. His whiff rate was comparable to Castellanos, who ranked among the worst in MLB. Yet, García's average exit velocity of 92.1 mph surpasses that of notable players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cal Raleigh, and Bryce Harper, and is only slightly lower than Matt Chapman and Michael Busch.
Defensively, García remains a valuable asset, having logged 16 Defensive Runs Saved in the outfield in 2025.
García's journey began in 2017 when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. It wasn't until 2021, at the age of 28, that he finally got his chance to shine in the majors. That season, he earned an All-Star nod and finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year balloting.
