Dave Lang, from the Associated Craft Butchers of Ireland (ACBI), assures us that despite the culling of around 45,000 turkeys, there's still an ample supply available. He estimates a demand for approximately 700,000 turkeys over the festive period and believes that, with the current lockdown measures in place, a major supply issue is unlikely. However, he admits that the situation is uncertain, and we can only hope for the best.
Mr. Lang highlights the already existing pressures on the sector, with higher prices across the board. He attributes this to increased feed, energy, transportation, and packaging costs, among other factors, which will likely result in an 8% price hike for turkeys this year.
But here's where it gets controversial... Lang believes that despite the potential for higher prices, a shortage is unlikely. He draws on his experience, stating that every year, there are predictions of scarcity and high prices, but come Christmas, the market stabilizes. Paddy Buckley, from FX Buckley, shares this optimism, believing that a full-blown crisis can be averted. He emphasizes the expertise of farmers in handling such situations and their understanding of the gravity of the matter.
And this is the part most people miss... even the bigger retailers, like Tesco and Lidl, are not panicking. They are closely monitoring the situation and assuring customers that they have no immediate concerns regarding turkey supply. Both retailers prioritize providing high-quality, 100% Irish turkeys for their customers during the festive season.
